Dating Purity Test

A version of the Rice Purity Test tuned for modern dating experiences — apps, relationships, hookups, and the full landscape of contemporary romantic life.

The Dating Purity Test is a focused variation of the classic Rice Purity Test that concentrates on relationship and dating experiences. Where the original test spreads its 100 questions across affection, substances, legal issues, and sexual experience, the dating variation narrows the lens to the romantic and relational categories specifically.

Why a dating-focused version?

The original Rice Purity Test was designed in 1924 for college freshmen and reflects the broader life-experience inventory model. A century later, dating itself has become a much more complex landscape: apps, hookup culture, situationships, ghosting, breadcrumbing, soft- launching relationships on Instagram, and dozens of other modern phenomena that didn't exist when the original test was written.

A dating-focused variation captures the texture of contemporary romantic life that the original test only loosely catalogues. It's also more useful for couples who want to compare specifically dating- related experiences without the entire substance-and-legal-history package the full test includes.

What this version includes

The dating variation expands the original's roughly 30 dating-related questions to a full 100, adding modern phenomena: dating app experiences, online dating habits, relationship milestones (first time meeting parents, first time saying "I love you"), modern breakup patterns (ghosting, blocking, soft-blocking), and relationship-adjacent social behaviors (sliding into DMs, posting about partners on social media, hard-launching vs soft-launching relationships).

The scoring model is identical to the original: start at 100, subtract one point for each item checked. The final number reflects how much of the modern dating landscape you've personally encountered.

How it differs from the original

The dating variation produces a different distribution of scores than the original. People with extensive dating histories but limited substance use or legal issues will score lower on the dating version than on the original. People with limited dating experience but extensive other life experiences will score higher. The numbers aren't directly comparable across the two versions.

For most couples and friend groups specifically interested in dating- related comparisons, the dating variation produces more meaningful conversations than the broad original test. The score gap means something specific (different dating histories) rather than something diffuse (different overall life paths).

Status: in development

The dating variation is currently in development. The full 100- question dating-focused version will launch in a future update with its own dedicated test interface, score interpretation pages, and statistics. In the meantime, the classic Rice Purity Test heavily covers dating experiences across its first three sections.

If you're specifically interested in dating-focused content for now, the original test's results page can give you a meaningful read on your dating history alone — the first three sections of the original test are essentially a dating inventory, and your section-specific score there approximates what a focused dating variation would produce.
